Brief History
Recreated in the year 1479 BC, as one of eleven Asgardians to become weapons in order to fight back against the relentless demon hoards plaguing the heavens, Karsten soon found himself being used as a much more sinister tool. The demi-god who changed him and his companions (including his younger brother) into The Grim Angels, was a corrupt sort of figure who sought more and more for them to commit solely to him and to sacrifice all that they had possessed before. His was never an issue on the part of the Grims who submitted wholly to him. Upon their creation each Grim Angel received a weapon as compensation for the one thing they had to sacrifice in order to become a Grim Angel. Karsten received his sword Einherjar in compensation for the loss of his wings.
This was a time when ancient Gods still ruled the heavens, and Asgard was at this time under the watchful eye of Erebus; demi-god of the underworld. Seeing that Hector was attempting a uprise against him by using the Grim Angels as his tools, Erebus began to arm himself against an attack. Hector, realising the danger of angering a God, branded the Grim Angels as having turned against Erebus and pleaded with Erebus to kill them all. The Grim Angels saw this treachery and killed Hector before he could damage them any further. But it was too late to save them. Unable now to trust anyone, Erebus saw to it that the races of Asgard were annihilated and The Grim Angels along with them. Only Karsten survived to see his people perish and the city he grew up in burn to ashes.
Before Asgard was destroyed Hector had harboured a deep resentment for Karsten and his rebellious and refused to name him as he had done the others. It wasn’t until he was revealed as a traitor and the Grim Angels were forced to kill him, that he named Karsten. In his final breath, he breathed that his name was ‘Aarom’ which a deep insult to Karsten as the name meant ‘demon’ in the Asgardian tongue. It was later it was revealed that all the Grim Angels were part demon. Karsten, however, was different - he was more demon than the others. How this occurred remains unknown.
Soon after the destruction of his Asgard, Erebus and his fellow Gods were banished by Zeus for crimes against the new Gods and were dispersed as raw energy and bound to mortal hosts for all eternity. Karsten followed them to Earth in search of revenge for his people and friends he had lost only to find that they had become hidden and now were unable to be found. Once he did discover them, he found it impossible to kill them as a mortal shell shielded them from his onslaught. Despite his vengeful instincts Karsten found it impossible to kill the innocent hosts who knew nothing of the Gods evil acts when they were at the peak of their power. Instead, he chose to befriend the Elementals.
The years before this encounter saw Karsten lead an interesting life on Earth. He fought in several of Earth’s historical wars and was acquainted with many of history’s most famous figures on a personal level. He is most proud of his service in the Crusades where he fought on the side of the Saracens, master minding the taking of Jerusalem from the Christians and is also quite proud at having a hand in the re-taking of Stalingrad during the Second World War. He was a soldier in the British armies for a short time during the One Hundred Year War (which, he is always quick to point out had actually lasted 116 years). Yet no one walks away from those situations without having more than a few bad experiences. He bears very few physical marks of the hardships he has endured but not all scars are visible to the eye.
As a result of his age and his service in defending numerous countries he is also highly decorated. He has been knighted several times under different names and by different monarchs. In Japan he was given the title Kensei (Sword Saint) for his mastery with a blade-these being the most notable of his achievements. Unfortunately however, due to the fact that even angels have limited capacity for remembering things and ink fading on the pages of his journals, there are gaps in Karstens memory. As a result, centuries of his life have been lost
Character Personality
Karsten can appear very childish and immature but when push comes to shove, he is a very serious individual. He takes the protection of his friends and family most seriously. He tends to keep to himself and as a result, not very much is known about his life from when he was created to the present day. However, anyone who knows him well would know that beneath his immature demeanour lies a deeply tormented soul.
