Brief History

Christine Daaë was born to Angelique Valerius and Gustav Daaë on the 12th February 1848, in the home of the her grandparent’s, off the coast of Saint Quay, Perros. Tragically her mother died from complications in child birth, and she was left with only her father and her grandparents (Professor Antoine Valerius and his wife, Marie-Joséphine [Fayette] ) to fend for her. Christine had a rather idyllic childhood by the sea, where she was the pride and joy of the little town, with her lark like voice, bright eyes and long perfect curls. She always could be found playing on the beach with a red scarf that belonged to her mother about her neck. It was this particular scarf which led her to meet her first real friend, Raoul De Chagney, a young aristocrat, who ran into the sea to fetch it when it blew away from her, while she was playing one day.

Christine or ‘Little Lotte’ as she was known in those days, spent most of her time with her father and Raoul, listening to stories of old Scandinavian folktales, or travelling about door to door singing while her father played so they could earn money. It was a simple life, but it was her paradise. Then one evening tragedy struck. That night in December, her father did not return from his regular vigil to his dead wife’s grave. Her grandfather went out to search for him, and came back an hour later, with her father who was half frozen and very ill. He was put to bed and was tragically dead the next morning. The reason for his death was always uncertain and Christine often spends many hours trying to understand why. Before he died, he told Christine that when he was gone he would send her the Angel of Music to protect her and to guide her. That night Christine packed up her things and moved with her new guardian Mme. Antoinette Giry to the Opera Populaire in Versailles.

It was there that she first heard the ‘Angel of Music’ and devoted her days to perfecting her god given gift under the tutelage of her mysterious mentor. Eventually it becomes apparent to her that there is more to her angel than she first realised and it is then she comes to learn that her angel, is not only her childhood friend ‘Monsieur Erik’ who she has not seen in years but also ‘The Phantom of the Opera’. Torn between her devotion to her angel, the feelings she is forming for him as a man and her uncertain affections for the Vicompte De Chagney, Christine finds herself in an awkward position where she must discover where her true affections lie – before it is much too late.

Character Personality

Christine by nature is vivacious and sweet and is often the light in the days of all whom she meets. She is kind, caring and motherly and always watches out for those around her. She believes strongly in morals and good will. She is however quite shy and timid, to such an extent that she can be walked all over by people, such as Meg Giry and the other ballet rats.
