Brief History

Christine Daaë was born to Angelique Valerius and Gustav Daaë on the 12th February 1848, in the home of the her grandparent’s, off the coast of Saint Quay, Perros. Tragically her mother died from complications in child birth, and she was left with only her father and her grandparents (Professor Antoine Valerius and his wife, Marie-Joséphine [Fayette] ) to fend for her. Christine had a rather idyllic childhood by the sea, where she was the pride and joy of the little town, with her lark like voice, bright eyes and long perfect curls. She always could be found playing on the beach with a red scarf that belonged to her mother about her neck. It was this particular scarf which led her to meet her first real friend, Raoul De Chagney, a young aristocrat, who ran into the sea to fetch it when it blew away from her, while she was playing one day.

Christine or ‘Little Lotte’ as she was known in those days, spent most of her time with her father and Raoul, listening to stories of old Scandinavian folktales, or travelling about door to door singing while her father played so they could earn money. It was a simple life, but it was her paradise. Then one evening tragedy struck. That night in December, her father did not return from his regular vigil to his dead wife’s grave. Her grandfather went out to search for him, and came back an hour later, with her father who was half frozen and very ill. He was put to bed and was tragically dead the next morning. The reason for his death was always uncertain and Christine often spends many hours trying to understand why. Before he died, he told Christine that when he was gone he would send her the Angel of Music to protect her and to guide her. That night Christine packed up her things and moved with her new guardian Mme. Antoinette Giry to the Opera Populaire in Versailles.

It was there that she first heard the ‘Angel of Music’ and devoted her days to perfecting her god given gift under the tutelage of her mysterious mentor. Eventually it becomes apparent to her that there is more to her angel than she first realized.

The night after the performance of Hannibal by Chalumeau (in which Christine was given the lead after La Carlotta feel mysteriously ill), her ‘angel’ fulfilled her dreams and showed himself to her and took her through the mirror down into his lair. It is there that she comes to learn that her angel, is not only her childhood friend ‘Monsieur Erik’ who she has not seen in years but also ‘The Phantom of the Opera’. He brought her down to his home with the intention of expressing his love for her, and at first she returns this love but it is not long before the tables turn on Erik and he finds himself scorned once again. On the performance night of Jerome Reyer’s ‘Il Muto’, Erik kills a stage hand named Buquet under the influence of the drug morphine (of which at the time he is an addict). Christine is so frightened by this action that she flies straight into the arms of her childhood friend Raoul, whom in her fear she agrees to marry. Erik overhears this and is heartbroken, vowing revenge on them both. A couple of months later, Christine is forced to perform in his opera, ‘Don Juan Triumphant’ during which she unmasks him – and is taken back down below where she is given an ultimatum to choose between him or Raoul. In the end she chooses to leave with Raoul but leaves Erik with a final goodbye kiss.

The following month, Christine found herself living an unhappy life with her overprotective fiancé Raoul, and was constantly thinking about her long lost friend and angel. One night, she awoke to see a figure standing over her bed and was shocked to see it was Erik. Beside herself with joy she begged him to take her away with him so they could be together. Erik was stunned by this and tried to get her to reconsider but failed. He agreed eventually and brought her back to his home for a time. There, their affections grew and they made love for the first time. Little did they know that she would fall pregnant, and that this would also be the start of a secret affair between the two.

Christine returned to Raoul to protect her relationship with Erik on the condition that she could sing again in the opera. Raoul agreed and Christine became the prima donna once again, but this was during the Franco- Prussian war and all the performances had to be conducted in secret. This allowed further time for her and Erik to meet, and as time went on they fell deeper and deeper in love with each other. Unfortunately after about six months of this – Raoul began to suspect that Christine was being unfaithful. His fears were well grounded and in fear of losing her he confined her to her room in his manor, forbidding her to see Erik again. The following weeks saw the trio plunged into a prolonged battle eventually and tragically ending in Christine’s death (after the assumed demise of her lover, Erik – led her to drink a phial of arsenic). Both she and the baby (supposedly) died. Unbeknownst to the dying Christine, Erik was still alive. He came to her in her last moments and stayed with her until she passed away. He was so distraught by the loss that he soon after disappeared not to be seen again until 1899.

Over 100 years later, Christine was resurrected by Brad and Carl who had discovered a dying, heartbroken Erik in the rafters of the ruined Opéra Populaire. They were reunited and married soon after and now live happily together in the Opera House with their children and friends.

Character Personality

Christine by nature is bubbly and sweet and is often the light in the days of all she meets. She is kind, caring and motherly and always watches out for those around her. She believes strongly in morals and good will. She has one small negative side to her though. She can become extremely jealous when it comes to Erik…
